Julie Herzl’s Aria

About

Theodor is a groundbreaking Israeli Opera sung in Hebrew that offers a bold portrait of Theodor Herzl, the visionary prophet of the Jewish State. Co-created by composer Yonatan Cnaan and librettist/director Ido Ricklin, the production is conducted by Nimrod David Pfeffer.

The score, orchestrated by Eran Zehavi, masterfully interweaves two pivotal timelines: the young Theodor’s student years in Vienna and the adult Herzl’s transformative experience covering the Dreyfus trial in Paris.

A dramatic highlight is Julie’s aria, in which Herzl’s wife delivers a scathing reaction to his early, desperate proposal of mass conversion to Christianity as a solution to antisemitism. Recognized by Opera Now as one of the best operas of 2023, Theodor is a powerful exploration of the human struggle behind a legendary legacy.
